This post is in collaboration with Titan Books. I was very kindly this copy of Sky In The Deep to read and review on Clem Loves.
Now as you may already know, I am a big fan of fantasy and sci-fi novels. They are a genre of novels that I absolutely love to get stuck in to. A genre that really ignites my imagination and a genre that takes me on a journey, a journey to far away lands and a whole entirely different world.
What first grabbed my attention when reading a little bit about Sky In The Deep. is that this book has a strong female lead. Sky In The Deep is a fast-paced, exciting fantasy viking novel by Adrienne Young. “Perfect for fans interested in folklore, fairy tales and historical stories” Titan Books. (I’m a big fan of fairy tales and historical stories!) Sky In The Deep is Adrienne’s debut novel.
Sky In The Deep
“Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.
Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.
She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.”
Eelyn, who is just seventeen years old, is a strong, brave and independent young girl. Eelyn will jump straight in to fight for her family and loved ones, to protect and save them, even at the times when it seems almost impossible.
Straight away, we are brought right in to the middle of a battle. A captivating first page that drew me straight in. An exciting and fast paced beginning that left me quickly turning from page to page, devouring each and every single word.
As Eelyn, with the help of her fighting partner, move through the midst of the battle, both become separated in the fog and in that moment, everything changes. Just when Eelyn finds herself in deep trouble, a familiar face is there beside her, someone who is with the enemy, but who in that moment protects Eelyn from a Riki warrior and tells her to run. Her brother.
But everyone else around her, thinks that it is in fact the spirit of her brother who saved her, but Eelyn know different, she knows that that was in fact her brother, in human form. Although both clans are at war with one another, Eelyn begins to realise that they may in fact have more n common than they realise. A novel about family and friendship, loyalty and faith. It’s about everything you thought you knew about someone, is completely the opposite and that even those who you are fighting against, are just like you.
Sky In The Deep is an addictive, gripping and stunning debut novel from Adrienne Young. A fantastic and brilliantly written novel that has satisfied my craving for my love of fantasy novels. One that has very quickly become a strong favourite of mine.
If you are looking for your next fantasy and young adult novel fix, then this is the book for you. One that I can guarantee you will absolutely love. I can’t wait to read more from Adrienne.
